Hi -

The PR team is helping to set up a blog channel for Gary, and we were looking to get some support in the design and set-up. Melissa will be speaking with Gary soon about getting it set up; just wanted to flag that we'll likely need support. Should we file a separate bug for web dev to get the url set up?

Thanks!
Hi Annika. This bug will cover the visual design for the blog...probably best to file a website bug (and be sure to copy Mike Alexis) for the actual implementation of the design. Also, when it's ready to go live you'll need to file an IT bug for that. Lots of bugs needed to set up a blog.

Pieces of info we need for this bug:
- urgency level/due date
- visual direction (one option would be to do something completely custom and personalized like Mitchell's blog; another option would be to do something more in the general style and template of blog.mozilla.com - the latter option would be quicker & easier, but it's up to you guys)
Hi Slater,
I think the due date would be by the end of the month, if possible. The visual direction would be to do something that includes or incorporates Firefox branding/flair. We want to get something relatively simple up and running as the channel will likely be fleshed out and developed once the Dir. of Corp Comm comes on board.

Hope that helps!
Melissa
Designing and coding a new theme by the end of the month will be tough. The good news is that we have some existing themes already loaded into our WP setup...it may take IT's help to implement (or it may not), but it should be minimal effort on their part.

My reco for the short term would be to take the theme http://blog.mozilla.com or http://blog.mozilla.com/userresearch/ and then modify it to have Gary's name at the top, more relevant sidebar info, etc. That should all be doable thru the standard WP interface once the theme is in place. (This is the same thing I recommended for the privacy blog.)

That would get us most of the way there and buy some more time to create something a little more personalized to him later on.

Sound good?
sounds good. let's use the blog.moz one. feels a bit more firefoxy :)
Okay, cool. I'm going to ask Ty to put something awesome together for Gary. Basing it on existing themes is the best way to go, agreed. And we can do something slightly custom at the top to differentiate it from the rest and give it an extra oomph. Would be cool if there was some sort of a photo (community / generally mozilla) that we could use in the masthead... but otherwise, keeping it relatively simple (we can always tweak later if needed).

When would be our design hand-off deadline to get this implemented by end of month?

@tara - i don't know the answer to this. is it something Ty is going to fill in?

Now is definitely the time to loop in Mike Alexis (copied on this bug). He's a better person than we are to answer any questions around implementation.

For most of our other blogs, we've used a freelance developer named Craig Cook. If he's available, he'd be a good guy to use but I don't have visibility into his schedule.

Chiming in with a few thoughts:

*Do we need a new blog, or would it make more sense to create an experience off of an existing blog with it's own RSS feed (this can be done with a very small amount of work and creates the appearance of an individual blog). The benefit is easy to launch and leverages an existing taxonomy, which creates better seo and the ability for related content)

*A single wordpress instance can have as many unique themes as you want, so this would also allow gary to have a unique look, but require much much less development.

*We should determine why a subdomain v. mozilla.org/gary-kovacs

Let me know your thoughts, and I'll help you steward this through launch.

Best,
CB

I think there probably is legit reason for Gary to have his own blog, but I do recommend having it based on some of the existing Mozilla styles (with modifications to personalize). I also would recommend blog.mozilla.com/gary (or something) since that's the blog convention we typically follow.

Someone from PR should provide the more definitive answer to Chrissie's questions though!
Summary: We would like to get a blog set up for Gary → Design Gary Kovacs blog
Hey guys, please comment on next steps asap so we can get things moving here. Especially if the intention is to get this done in Q3. Timing is running short. Thanks.
@Sprior - please upload one of the casual head shots of Gary to this bug so the design team can incorporate into the design.

We also would like his twitter feed. And then a one-sentence description from his bio. Let's connect to compile all of these and get them added to the bug asap!
Attached image Gary's favorite photo
I folks - Uploaded his favorite photo in the attached. Let me know if it does not work for whatever reason and I can update.

His Twitter feed:
http://twitter.com/#!/mozillagary
Photo came through okay, thanks Shannon. it's more on the corporate side than what I was hoping for... but we can drop that in and see how it looks, and change it later (or leave it out for now and add later, etc).

Ty, can you put this together for us based on the existing blog.mozilla.com template? I think you can also take inspiration from some of the other recent blogs you did... but the overall template/theme should feel consistent. Basic things to include:

* Mozilla tab at the top
* A friendly intro to Gary's blog
* A one liner bio (Shannon can you supply this please?)
* Incorporate the photo somehow at the time (if you can)
* Include a link to his twitter, along with a twitter feed off to the side.

Let me know if I can help with anything else or offer suggestions.

Last recommendations:

*add the Firefox download button to the template
*facebook like?
*plan for misspellings and set up redirects for the most common mispellings
Here is what i have for the blog homepage.

With regards to the FB "Like" button - Is this intended for the entire blog or specific to each post?

We could also include a "Tweet" button on the post + responses page as we currently have on the AMO Blog (http://blog.mozilla.com/addons/2011/08/22/firefox-6-breaking-themes-plugin/)
Nice! I do think the download button is a little too highly prioritized on the page...perhaps move it down into the sidebar and use one of these (which were intended for use on blogs):

Dude Ty. you're so fast :) ! thanks so much. like this! Agree with John's comment. Kinda wish his picture was bigger, but happy to go with this for now.
We also need the Twitter Feed :)
Twitter feed displaying recent tweets? or a link?
Recent tweets (and a link to follow)
Looks great to me - thanks!

Any other feedback from the group?

It looks good to me. PR?
Oops, just re-read comment #24. Looks like it's approved.
